RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Sophomore transfer Tony Dobbins' layup with 9.1 seconds left Friday lifted Richmond to a 62-61 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the season-opener for both teams.
The Spiders (1-0) trailed, 59-50 with 4:11 remaining, outscoring Appalachian State 12 to 2 over that period. Mike Skrocki had six points and Dobbins added five during the Spiders rally.
The Spiders scored 11 straight points early in the game, but faltered around halftime as the Mountaineers (0-1) put together a 21-4 run from late in the first half to early in the second stanza. The run was capped by a 3-pointer from Matt Jones, giving the Mountaineers a 37-32 lead with 18:34 remaining.
The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Spiders 38 to 28, but committed 22 turnovers to the Spiders 13.
, off the bench, led the Spiders with 15 points. Dobbins and Skrocki had a career-best 14, and Reggie Brown 10.
Richmond shot an atrocious 3-of-21 (.143) from three-point range in the contest. It was the worst three-point outing for a Spiders team since January 27, 1997 (0-of-9 vs. James Madison).
