UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond department of athletics announced today that Director of Golf Operations Kevin Lynch has signed the first two recruits ever for the Spider women's golf program that will begin competitive play during the 2002-03 season.
The first two recruits in women's golf history are Sarah O'Neill (Potomac, Maryland) and Whitney McComis (Bridgeport, Texas). Both have enjoyed decorated junior careers and will immediately impact the new program.
"Both Sarah and Whitney bring a solid competitive golf background," Lynch said. "They have the work ethic to take their games to the next level."
O'Neill has two top-3 finishes in AJGA Junior All-Star events. She is playing in the 2001 AJGA Polo Golf Junior Classic and is a three-time member of the Maryland girls state team. She won the 1999 Maryland Girls State Championship and participated in the 1999 U.S. Girls Junior Amateurs. She also competed in the AJGA junior all-star tournament and earned a top-15 finish in the AJGA Lucent Technologies girls' junior championship.
McComis is the three-time defending district champion and earned all-state honors her first three years of high school. She has more than 18 career wins and is a Future Collegians World Tour Championships qualifier. McComis played No. 1 for head coach Larry Fair at Bridgeport High School. She earned Fort Worth Star Telegram All-Area team in 2000 and carries a 3.2 USGA handicap.
"This is a strong foundation for building a successful women's golf program here at Richmond," Lynch said.
