Spiders Place Fourth at Sea Best Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Spider women's golf team opened its spring season with a strong fourth-place result at the Sea Best Invitational Tuesday, finishing behind only a pair of top-20 programs in Florida and Duke plus Stetson of the Atlantic Sun Conference in the 11-team field. Richmond finished the 54-hole event with a team score of 903, 39 strokes over par, and carded a 9-over 297 in Round 3 Tuesday, third lowest of any school.
We played really well today, said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. It was very, very cold and extremely windy yesterday. We do have some things to improve on, but it was really nice to get three rounds of golf under our belts and kind of see where we are.
Richmond's fourth-place finish was its best in a full-field event this year. The Spiders were led by freshman Addie Doroh, who tied for 13th on the individual leaderboard at 5-over par (221). Her even-par 72 Tuesday was two shots better than any other Spider, and her 13th-place finish was her second top-20 result of the season along with her fifth-place finish in the season-opening Tribe Invitational.
I think we knocked a little bit of dust off her yesterday, and I only can see her game getting better. She worked really hard over winter break, and that's showing as well, especially in today's round, said Barlow of Doroh.
Junior Maya Beasley placed 20th at 9-over par (225), recording her 13th career top-20 finish.
Senior Hannah Lydic tied for 25th at 12-over par (228), and classmate Olivia Wilkie tied for 38th at 17-over par (233). Wilkie's 2-over 74 Tuesday was an eight-shot improvement from her Round 2 score.
Sophomore Katie Magner tied for 45th at 21-over par (237).
The two final members of the Spider roster competed as individuals, with sophomore Caroline Thompson tying for 55th at 28-over par (244) and junior Heather Appelson placing 65th at 49-over par (265).
This group really meshes well together. And it was a golf course where we could kind of see each other a lot. So we could waive. They could waive. It felt like we were all together, actually, which was really nice, said Barlow.
Richmond's next tournament is the More Than Golf Invitational in Aiken, S.C. from March 1-3. The Spiders regular season will end at the A-10 Championship in Orlando, Fla. from April 20-22.
We do need to get on the course more. We do need to work on some long putting and some approach shots. We've just got to dial those in, said Barlow. But we do have time to get better between now and April.
