Spiders Eliminated In Field Hockey Championships

PHILADELPHIA -- Top-seeded Massachusetts used a second half extended time goal to tie the contest and scored the game-winner in the second overtime to defeat #4 seed Richmond, 2-1, in the Verizon Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championships on Saturday afternoon at Temple University.
Richmond's defense held UMass to just one shot in the first half while the Spiders put a 1-0 lead on the board. Senior defender Erika Cohen (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) scored her second goal of the season at the 19:34 mark of the first period. Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and Holly Chase (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) assisted on the goal. UMass was able to muster three penalty corners in the last 3:30 of the game and tied the contest on the final play when Anke Bruemmer knotted the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime, UMass senior Lindsay Abbot scored off a rebound with 4:12 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Minutewomen to their sixth straight Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship game.
Richmond finishes the season with a 10-10 mark, its best record since 1993.
