LAS VEGAS (AP) - Mario Austin scored 20 points as Mississippi State beat Richmond 74-72 on Thursday in the second round of the Las Vegas Classic.
Austin made one of two free throws with 17.6 seconds left to complete the scoring. Richmond had a chance to win, but Reggie Brown's 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer.
Mississippi State (11-0) matched its best start ever. The Bulldogs also started the 1957-58 season 11-0.
Timmy Bowers scored 16 for the Bulldogs. Tony Dobbins led Richmond (3-5) with 23 points, and Brown added 20.
Mississippi State shot 28-for-52 from the field for 53.8 percent, while the Spiders were 27-for 52 for 51.9 percent.
The Spiders had built their largest lead, 59-53, with 8:36 left in the game, but Mississippi State rallied and took the lead for good on a Michael Gholar's 3-pointer with 3:15 remaining.
