CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Richmond women's swimming team had an outstanding weekend at the University of Virginia Invitational from November 29 through December 1. The Spiders placed third in the nine-team draw, setting seven school records over the three-day Invitational. Freshman Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) broke three individual marks and was part of a record-setting relay team while fellow freshman Erin Lears (Towson, Md./Roland Park Country School) set two of her own.
Adams set Richmond individual event records in the 200 IM (2:05.00), 400 IM (4:20.96), and 100 breaststroke (1:05.54) while also swimming the final portion of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay (7:35.46), along with junior Elizabeth Cook (Rockville, Va./Collegiate), sophomore Julie Waizenhofer (Mason, Ohio/Mason), and sophomore Casey Dluhos (Savannah, Ga./Herschel V. Jenkins). Her time in the 400 IM places her in the top 20 in the country in the event and the 800 freestyle relay time is in the top 25.
Lears recorded Richmond's top time ever in the 1650 freestyle (17:01.25), a time that also places her in the top 25 in the country right now. In the process, her split time at the 1000 mark of that event (10:19.61) also set a school record.
Also setting a school record was the 200 medley relay team of senior Kristin Cavanah (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School), freshman Leslie Moatz (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown Area), senior Kristin Newkirk (Marietta, Ga./Alan C. Pope), and sophomore Maureen Sabri (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersberg Academy), with a time of 1:47.22. In all, the Spiders recorded 11 season-best times in individual events during the Invitational, 10 of which are also Atlantic 10 season bests. All five relays the team swam were also both Richmond and Atlantic 10 season best times.
Richmond does not return to the pool for over a month when the team hosts St. Francis (Pa.) on January 18 at 6:00 p.m.
