
Richmond Posts An 82-71 Victory Over East Carolina

RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond placed four players in double figures paced by senior forward (Fayetteville, N.C./Fayetteville 71st) 19 points to lead the Spiders to an 82-71 victory over East Carolina in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action tonight at the Robins Center.
Joining Stevenson in double figures for the Spiders (17-6, 8-4 CAA), were sophomore center Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla./Sebring) with 15 points, senior guard Kinte Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) added 14 points and freshman forward Mike Skrocki (Howell, N.J./Christian Brothers) had 10 points. Richmond shot 56 percent from the field for the game, including 64 percent in the closing half.
Freshman center Gabriel Mikulas' produced a game-high 21 points, including 16 in the second half. Junior guard Fred Primus delivered 14 points, while the freshmen tandem of Jimmy Bishop and Erroyl Bing scored 11 points each.
Stevenson had 11 first half points bolstering the Spiders owned a 38-32 halftime advantage. The Spiders ballooned their advantage to seven points on two occasions in the first half, but could not break ahead any further. Bishop kept the Pirates within striking distance, matching Stevenson's 11-point first half total.
Trailing 54-47 with 12:17 remaining in the contest, East Carolina staged a 14-4 scoring surge and led 61-58 with 7:49 to go following a Mikulas layup. On the ensuing possession, Skrocki connected on a key three-pointer to knot the contest at 61-all. Scrocki's long distance trey ignited a 16-6 Spider scoring run thereafter and Richmond held a 77-67 advantage with 2:28 left in the game. Zwayer delivered six points in the decisive stretch, with all of his contributions coming on layups. After East Carolina cut the margin to 68-64, Smith pushed the Spiders lead back to six points (70-64) on a whirling pirouette to the basket. Richmond accounted for the next four points thereafter to help decide the game.
Four Spiders reached double figures for the first time since the team's 90-80 victory on January 12 at the Robins Center and Richmond's point total marked its highest since that same game.
Richmond resumes conference action on Saturday, February 17, hosting cross-town rival Virginia Commonwealth University at 7:30 p.m. at the Robins Center. Stevenson needs 10 more points to become the 33rd player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point plateau.
