RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond placed five players in double figures, paced by the tandem of senior forwards Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./Fayetteville 71st) and Kinte Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) to post a 70-66 victory over cross-town rival VCU tonight in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball action at the Robins Center.
With his 15-point output, Stevenson became the 33rd player in program history to score 1,000 points. He now has 1,005 over the past two seasons in a Spider uniform.
Sophomore guard Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and senior guard Scott Ungerer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) had 11 points each and sophomore center Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla./Sebring) registered 10 points.
Rams sophomore center L.F. Likcholitov delivered a game-high 19 points and corralled a career-high 16 rebounds, while freshman forward Johnnie Story added a career-best 16 points. Likcholitov and Story combined for 14 of the Rams' 26 field goals in the game. VCU's guard tandem of Bo Jones and LaMar Taylor shot a combined 2-for-16 from the field in the contest.
The Spiders built an early 14-8 advantage, but went five minutes without a field goal as VCU proceeded to an 18-14 lead and eventually ballooned it to 24-18 with 4:42 remaining in the opening half. However, Richmond closed the first half with a 12-6 surge, with Stevenson providing eight points in the stretch and the two teams were tied at 30-all at intermission. Lickholitov led the Rams with 12 points and nine boards in the opening half.
Richmond's lead grew to as many as five points at 45-40 at the 14:06 mark following an Ungerer trey. But VCU refused to go away, scoring the contest's next five points to tie the contest at 45-all. The Rams owned a 52-48 lead with 10:29 to go after a Dominic Jones dunk, but Richmond responded with a 19-8 spurt to help secure the victory. Stevenson's three-point play with 5:46 on the clock put Richmond ahead 57-56 and gave them an advantage they would never relinquish. Brown was instrumental in the run as well, accounting for nine points.
The Spiders scored 16 points off of eight Rams turnovers in the second half. However, VCU stayed close by controlling the boards, out-rebounding Richmond, 43-24.
Richmond resumes conference action on Wednesday, February 21, hosting American at 7 p.m. at the Robins Center.
