Richmond Grabs Eighth Road Win of the Season
02/03/2001 | Men's Basketball
Richmond failed to convert its first four shots of the game as William & Mary led by four on two separate occasions in the first four minutes of the contest. The Spiders took their first lead of the night on a Stevenson trey at the 10:21mark and would never relinquish it. Richmond would stage a 24-9 scoring run from that point as Stevenson and Zwayer combined for 13 of Richmond's final 24 points of the half as the Spiders took a 32-20 lead at intermission. Richmond shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range in the first half
The Tribe sliced away at Richmond's lead to start the second stanza. Ignited by William & Mary guard Jim Moran's six points, the Tribe closed to within five (36-31) after an 11-4 spurt to start the half. Richmond stretched its lead back to 13 after a Jeff Myers' (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) triple with 5:55 remaining. The Tribe would not go away quietly, pulling to within six points (49-43) when Moran scored a layup at the 3:15 mark. On an inbounds on Richmond's next possession and with only four seconds remaining on the shot clock, Richmond guard Scott Ungerer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) found Stevenson for the alley-oop. Stevenson added another field goal in the paint less than 35 seconds later to seal the 57-49 victory. The win was the fourth straight for the Spiders.
Richmond concludes its out of conference schedule on Monday, February 5, when they host Navy in the Robins Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
