02/05/2001 | Men's Basketball
Physical play dominated the first half as the teams combined for 21 fouls. Richmond made 17 trips to the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes and tallied more free throws made (10) than field goals made (8). Navy used a 4-0 run to close out the half and gave the Midshipmen a 31-27 lead at intermission.
The Mids extended their halftime lead by scoring six of the first eight points of the second half. A Robert Reeder jumper with 17:11 remaining gave Navy an eight-point advantage (37-29). Richmond senior forward Greg Stevenson (Fayetteville, N.C./71st) would respond scoring seven of the Spiders' next nine points of the contest. Center (Santa Clarita, Calif./Williston Northhampton) offensive rebound and putback gave Richmond its first lead of the second half (38-37) with 13:12 remaining. Navy refused to fold, regaining the lead, 42-41 after a Francis Ebong three-point play with 11:36 left in the game. The Spiders stingy defense would hold the Mids without a field goal over the next 6:14 and use a 14-4 scoring run to build a double-digit lead with just over five minutes remaining. Navy would not fold, though, closing to within two. Richmond center Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla../Sebring) quieted the Midshipmen rally retaliating with seven straight points, his layup at the 1:42 mark gave Richmond a comfortable lead as Spiders went on for the 69-55 win.
Brown, off the bench, led all scorers with 15 points. Greg Stevenson added 14 while Eric Zwayer scored 12 points. Navy was led in scoring by Ebong who registered nine points. The Spiders shot 28-of-38 from the free throw line, a season-high for both free throws made and attempted. The 38 free throws attempted are the most for a Spiders team since January 26, 1991.
Richmond will next be in action on Saturday, February 10 as the Spiders travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on James Madison. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
