Richmond Swimming and Diving Defeats Navy, 176-122

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's swimming and diving team posted 13 first place finishes to record a 176-122 victory over Navy today in women's swimming and diving action today at Robins Center Natatorium.
The Spiders were paced by sophomore Elizabeth Cook's (Richmond, Va./The Collegiate School) three first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (25.01), 100-yard freestyle (54.05) and 200 individual medley (2:10.67). Richmond junior Kristin Newkirk (Marietta, Ga./Alan C. Pope) also had an outstanding meet, capturing top honors in the 100-yard butterfly (58.32) and 200-yard butterfly (2:09.78). Newkirk also teamed with freshman Lyndsey Delquadro (Centreville, Va./Centreville), junior Emily Pala (Signal Mountain, Tenn./Girls Preparatory School) and newcomer Maureen Sabri (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) to claim the 200 medley relay in 1:51.40. Newkirk and Sabri also combined with first-year swimmers Casey Dluhos (Savanah, Ga./Hersteel V. Jenkins) and Julie Waizenhofer (Mason, Ohio/Mason) to win the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.60. Sophomore Leigh Figh (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) swept the 500 freestyle (5:20.35) and 1000 freestyle (10:44.32) events. Dluhos and junior Kristin Cav anah (North Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) also performed well with victories in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.22) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.12), respectively.
On the boards, sophomore diver Katie Shipe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) captured both the one-meter (264) and three-meter (258.45) dive.
Richmond returns to action, competing in the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday-Saturday, February 21-24 at George Mason University.
