Richmond, Va. - Senior Candace Cummings and junior Cathy Gross each scored three times to lead No. 3 seed George Mason to a 10-5 win over sixth-seeded Richmond in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Lacrosse Championships at the Pioneer Spring Sports Festival on Friday, April 14. The two teams combined to score six goals in the first ten minutes of play. The Patriots built a 4-1 lead after Cummings converted a free position shot at 21:13. Richmond responded as Spiders freshman attacker Katie Dolan (Towson, Md./Towson) found the back of the net a minute later. George Mason would add two goals to end the half with a 7-3 advantage.
The Patriots would add another score less than a minute into the second half when Cummings scored on another free position to give GMU an 8-3 lead. Richmond would hold Mason scoreless over the next 17 minutes as Spiders goalkeeper Kelly Johnson (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) recorded a career-high 21 saves. Two second half Spiders scores, the last coming at 13:18 on a Alie Carey goal (8-5), would be the closest Richmond would get to the third-seeded Patriots. Two late Mason scores from Gross would seal the 10-5 victory.
George Mason advances to the semifinal round where they will face the winner of the Loyola/American contest Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Spiders (5-9, 1-5 CAA) will conclude the season on Friday, April 21, visiting the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Match time is slated for 3 p.m.
