Richmond Scores In Ninth And Tenth, Edges Radford 9-8

Radford, Virginia - Senior catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) walked and scored the tying run with two outs in the top of the ninth and was hit by a pitch with two outs in the tenth to bring home the winning run as the Richmond Spiders defeated the Radford Highlanders 9-8 in 10 innings this afternoon in Radford, Virginia. The Spiders improved to 18-16, while Radford fell to 9-20.
Radford led 8-7 heading to the ninth. With one out in the top of the ninth, Nathans drew a walk. He stole second base as senior pinch-hitter Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) struck out. Freshman pinch-hitter Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) then singled to bring Nathans home and tie the game at 8-8.
After the Highlanders were held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) led off the top of the tenth with a single. Two outs later, Reaver was on second base. Two Spiders were hit by pitches to load the bases, then Nathans was hit to bring Reaver in with the go-ahead run. Radford got a leadoff single in the bottom of the tenth, but could not score as the Spiders claimed the 9-8 victory.
Freshman lefthander Thomas Martin (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) pitched the final three innings for the Spiders and picked up the win. He allowed three hits, no runs, walked no one and struck out three. Martin raised his record to 4-3.
Richmond had 12 hits on the afternoon. Freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) had a double and a triple and knocked in two runs. Freshman DH Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) had two hits and scored two runs. Junior third baseman Mike Gula (Austin, Tex./Westwood) had two hits, including a double, and scored one run. Sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) smacked a two-run homer in the fourth, his ninth home run of the season.
The Spiders will host George Washington on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:00 p.m. at Pitt Field.
