Spiders Drop Series Opener to Penn State

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond baseball team dropped the series opening game 5-0 to Penn State Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Richmond, now 3-3 on the season, and Penn State, 2-2, return to Pitt Field for a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. Game two of the doubleheader will begin approximately 35 minutes after game one ends. Sunday's series finale has been canceled due to inclement weather headed to the region.
Spider starter Glenn Smith kept the Nittany Lions off the board over four and a third of an inning. Smith allowed two hits, including a solo home run to break up the scoreless affair, with three walks and a career-high five strikeouts over a career-high five innings.
Dylan Winebrenner went 2-for-3 with a triple, stolen base and a hit by pitch. In the first he had a base hit to left, then advanced to second on Sean Scanlon's base hit. Winebrenner stole third then was tagged out trying to steal home in a double steal play. In the third he legged out a triple but was stranded.
Trevor Dosenbach collected a two-out hit and stole second in the fourth but was stranded. Khris Morris also legged out a double in the sixth but was thrown out at home trying to score from second on Dosenbach's second hit of the game.
Angel Santiago-Cruz took over for Smith in the sixth. Santiago-Cruz scattered three runs, one earned, on four hits, and a strikeout over two innings of work. Christian Dray allowed one run on one hit, a walk and a hit batter in two-thirds of an inning in the eighth. Keane Hyer got the strikeout to get out of the frame. Sam Young allowed one hit and struck out two to keep Penn State off the board in the ninth.
