Martin, Chiaravalloti Lead Spiders To 10-3 CAA Win.

Richmond, Virginia - Freshman lefthander Thomas Martin (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scattered five hits over nine innings and sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) hit a grand slam and knocked in six runs as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the James Madison University Dukes 10-3 this afternoon at Pitt Field in the Colonial Athletic Association action. Richmond raised its record to 20-20 overall and 6-9 in the CAA, while the Dukes fell to 23-17-1 overall and 6-7 in the CAA.
With the victory, Richmond head coach Ron Atkins notched his 500th career win. In 17 seasons with the Spiders, Atkins has a record of 500-386-4.
Martin (5-4) hurled his third complete game of the season, going 9.0 innings with five hits, three runs, three walks and nine strikeouts.
The Spiders loaded the bases with two outs in the third before Chiaravalloti went deep for the 14th time this season, the top mark in the CAA. Sophomore second baseman Mitch Rigsby (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth for the Dukes to make the score 4-1. Richmond added a run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Spiders a 5-1 cushion. Rigsby smacked his fourth homer of the spring in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-2.
Richmond put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, with two coming in on a single by freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier). Chiaravalloti also had a two-run single as the Spiders went ahead 10-2. Rigsby added an RBI double in the top of the ninth to make the final 10-3 in favor of the Spiders.
Junior lefthander Adam Wynegar (Centreville, Va./Centreville) took the loss for the Dukes, but did record six strikeouts to give him a school-record 223 career strikeouts, passing the total of 220 by Dana Allison (1986-89). Senior outfielder Greg Miller (Herndon, Va./Herndon) singled in the ninth to set a school record with 285 career hits, passing the total of 284 by Kevin Razler (1996-99).
Richmond and James Madison will meet in game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Pitt Field.
