Stauffer Stifles Dukes 4-1

Richmond, Virginia - Freshman righthander Tim Stauffer (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Central Catholic) allowed four hits over eight innings as the University of Richmond Spiders defeated the James Madison University Dukes 4-1 this afternoon at Pitt Field in Colonial Athletic Association action. Richmond raised its record to 21-20 overall and 7-9 in the CAA, while the Dukes fell to 23-18-1 overall and 6-8 in the CAA.
Stauffer did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, when sophomore first baseman Eddie Kim (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) smacked an RBI double to right center to bring in James Madison's only run of the game. Stauffer gave up two doubles to Kim and two other singles. He walked four and struck out nine. Junior righthander Bake Leonards (Wyndmoor, Pa./Hill School) hurled a perfect ninth to earn his first collegiate save.
Richmond had its leadoff man reach and score in each of the first four innings. Freshman outfielder Bryan Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) homered to lead off the bottom of the first, his third home run of the season. Senior catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) led off the second with a single, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a two-out double by senior second baseman Matt Reid (Richmond, Va./Collegiate). Sophomore shortstop David Reaver (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) walked to lead off the third, moved to second on a walk and scored on a two-out single by Nathans. Senior DH Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) led off the fourth with a double and scored on a two-out double by Reaver to give the Spiders a 4-0 lead.
James Madison scored once in the sixth and had a chance for another in the eighth. Kim led off with a double and tried to score on a single to center by junior outfielder Steve Ballowe (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), but was thrown out at the plate by Pritz.
Sophomore righthander Chris Cochran (Reston, Va./South Lakes) hurled the complete game for the Dukes, allowing eight hits, four earned runs, three walks and he struck out a career-high 12.
Richmond and James Madison will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Pitt Field.
