Richmond Women's Lacrosse Wins Season Finale, 17-12

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Carrie Aitken (Paxton, Mass./St. Mark's School) scored six goals and recorded one assist while senior Jessie Popham (Arnold, Md./Severn School) registered four goals and two assists in lifting Richmond past UMBC, 17-12 on Friday afternoon at President's Field. Senior attacker Alexis Brandolini (Berwyn, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) collected two goals and two assists in the season finale for Richmond (4-11). The Spiders outscored the Retrievers 10-6 in the second half.
Richmond went ahead 2-0 in the contest after seven minutes of play but the Retrievers would respond quickly scoring the next five consecutive goals of the game. Retrievers midfielder Renee Tirocchi's score at the 9:39 mark of the first half put the visitors ahead, 5-2. The Spiders exploded offensively in the final two minutes of the first half scoring three goals in a 26 second span. Aitken's registered her second goal of the game at the 2:00 mark to pull the Spiders within one, 5-4. Brandolini controlled the ensuing draw and batted it to Kristy Gallagher (Chatsworth, N.J./Cherry Hill East) whose shot was deflected by Retrievers goalkeeper Amy Jagoda. Sophomore Brooke Garnett (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) picked up the loose ball in front of the cage and flipped it in for the score. The Spiders were not done, as Popham won the ensuing draw and fed Aitken who fired a winner to put Richmond up 7-6 at the break.
The Retrievers tied the contest at 7-7 when Lauren Traber scored her second goal of the afternoon at the 27:30 mark but that would as close as UMBC would get. Richmond put the contest out of reach scoring eight of the next nine goals of the game. Midfielder Lacy Pica, in her last game as a Spider, scored two goals. Popham's two assists in the contest gave her 28 in her three-year career, third-best on Richmond's all-time list.
