Richmond, Virginia - Senior first baseman Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) doubled and homered and scored three runs to lead the Maryland Terrapins to a 5-2 win over the Richmond Spiders this afternoon at Pitt Field. The game was called with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning due to rain and unplayable field conditions. Maryland improved to 17-36. Richmond finished the 2001 season with a 27-26 record, its 11th winning season in the past 12 years.
Maryland started the scoring with two unearned runs in the top of the second. With one out, Easter reached on an error and came around to score on an error, as did freshman catcher Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J./Christian Brothers) to give the Terps a 2-0 lead.
The Spiders cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on a home run by senior outfielder Chad Balog (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport), his second of the season. Maryland got the run back in the fourth as Easter launched his fifth home run of the season to give the Terps a 3-1 lead.
Richmond again cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) doubled, moved to third on a single by senior DH Manny Cicchiello (Weathersfield, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and scored on a double by senior catcher John Nathans (Warwick, N.Y./Trinity Pawling). On the play, Cicchiello was thrown out at the plate and the Spiders trailed 3-2.
Maryland scored a pair in the top of the sixth. Junior DH Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J./Morristown-Beard) led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Easter. McDonald scored on a single by senior shortstop Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y./Immaculate). Easter then barreled home on a sacrifice fly by Buffone that was caught in foul territory by freshman shortstop Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum). The Terps lead 5-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
The Spiders put a rally together in the bottom of the sixth. Chiaravalloti reached second on an error. Two outs later, junior third baseman Mike Gula (Austin, Tex./Westwood) was hit by a pitch. Freshman pinch-hitter Adam Tidball (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) was coming to the plate when the skies opened and heavy rain fell. After a two hour delay, the field was ruled unplayable and the game was called.
