UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - William & Mary senior forward Avery Willis scored a goal and added an assist to lift the 14th-ranked Tribe to a 3-0 victory over the Richmond Spiders Tuesday night at First Market Stadium. With the loss, the Spiders record falls to 1-2-0, while the Tribe improve to 5-0-0.
Tribe senior forward Janet Sury's first shot in the 34th minute was deflected and saved by Richmond goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill). Off of the deflection, Sury's second attempt was on the mark, finding the back of the net to give the Tribe a 1-0 advantage.
Off a restart in the 49th minute, forward Willis headed a pass from Keri Gordon into the far right corner of the goal just past the out-stretched arms of Samuehl for a 2-0 Tribe lead. William & Mary midfielder Emily Davis closed the scoring when her header hit the right post and bounced into the net at the 87:53 mark.
Richmond opens its Atlantic 10 conference slate on Monday, September 24 as they entertain George Washington. Game time is 7:00 at First Market Stadium.
