UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior midfielder Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) scored the game-winning goal at the 106:37 mark in the second overtime to lift the Spiders to a 3-2 win over George Washington in women's soccer action on Tuesday night. The game marked Richmond's first athletic contest as an all-sports member of the Atlantic 10.
Richmond (2-2-0) scored the game's first goal at the 11:02 mark of the first half when junior Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) headed sophomore Molly Rettig's (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) pass into the right corner of the net. The Colonials answered right back 14 seconds later when freshman forward Meghan Cracker delivered the first goal of her collegiate career, a shot from 10 yards out, to knot the score at 1-1. George Washington (2-4-0) sophomore forward Kim Warner's corner kick was on the mark at the 26:21 mark to senior Jessica Sultzer who deposited the header into the net and gave the visitors' a 2-1 advantage at the break.
The Spiders tied the contest in the second half when Merriam dribbled the ball down the far inside line, slipped it to freshman Whitney Sikes (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview), who in turn found a sliding Rettig who punched it past GW keeper Christine O'Malley for the score. The teams would play a scoreless first overtime and with just under two minutes into the second extra stanza, Johnson leading a 2-on-2 break would send a bullet past O'Malley to give the Spiders the win.
Richmond out shot George Washington, 32-7 in the contest. Colonials goalkeeper O'Malley posted a season-best 15 saves in the loss.
