University of Richmond head men's basketball coach John Beilein released the team's 2001-02 schedule today. The slate features eight opponents that appeared in postseason play last year, including five that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. The Spiders begin play as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference this season.
"This is an exciting time at the University of Richmond," Beilein said. "Playing in a new conference brings a sense of curiosity and anticipation. We look forward to the challenges offered by both our conference and our non-conference schedule alike."
The Spiders open the 2001-02 campaign hosting Appalachian State on November 16 before heading to UAB for a regional ESPN game on Saturday, November 24. Richmond will appear in the Las Vegas Invitational in mid-December, first battling Cincinnati on December 17 before heading to Las Vegas for the remainder of the tournament.
Highlighting a 13-game home schedule at the Robins Center are dates with conference teams La Salle (Jan. 5), UMass (Jan. 16) and George Washington (Jan. 30). In February, Richmond entertains pre-season Top 25 picks Xavier (Feb. 2) and St. Joseph's (Feb. 13) and hosts Dayton Feb. 10. In addition, the Spiders will host the Spider Invitational on December 28 and 29, a two-day event that also features James Madison, VMI and Cornell. Early December home dates against cross-town rival VCU (Dec. 1) and SEC foe Mississippi State (Dec. 5) plus a January 2 date at NCAA participant Wake Forest dot the schedule.
The schedule features five television dates on the Atlantic 10 Television Network and a regional ESPN contest. In addition, two games (at Cincinnati and at Dayton) will be broadcast on local affiliates in those markets with Richmond affiliates or other television opportunities to be determined.
