UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2001-02 season. Head coach Bob Foley, entering his sixth year at Richmond, will lead the Spiders into their inaugural season competing in the Atlantic 10 conference.
The Spiders have a demanding schedule this year that includes seven teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament. They open their schedule with two state rivals and two participants in the 2001 NCAA Tournament, at Virginia Tech (Nov. 16) and then the home-opener versus Virginia (Nov. 19). From there, the Spiders travel to the Virgin Islands for a Thanksgiving tournament (Nov. 24-26) where they will play Kansas State, Western Michigan, and Arizona State, another NCAA Tournament team from a year ago.
Also highlighting Richmond's non-conference schedule are games against North Carolina, 2001 post-season participants Maryland and Liberty, intrastate rivals VCU and William & Mary, and a late-December tournament at St. Peter's.
Richmond will compete in the West Division of the Atlantic 10 and have a home-and-home series with West Division opponents Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, La Salle, and Xavier. George Washington and Xavier each went to the NCAA Tournament last season, with Xavier reaching the Elite Eight. From the East Division, Richmond has home games versus Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and St. Bonaventure, while the Spiders will travel to play Fordham, St. Joseph's, and Temple.
The Spiders return two starters from a team that finished 16-12 one year ago. Senior point guard and All-American candidate Michele Koclanes led the Spiders in points and assists per game last year, while junior center Ebony Tanner led the team in rebounds.
