WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Richmond's women's cross country team placed third while the men's squad finished eighth at the William & Mary Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.
On the men's side, four runners posted personal-bests. Sophomore Seann Mulcahy (Wyanantskill, N.Y.) ran the 8,000 meter run in a time of 27:25.1, or a an average mile of 5:30. Teammates Matt Hannay (Princeton, N.J.), Jeff Watson (Darien, Conn.) and Jon Lauder (Oakton, Va.) also posted career-bests in Williamsburg, finishing 37th, 40th and 55th respectively, among the 127 runners participating.
"All of our men ran personal best's today," said Richmond head coach Steve Taylor. "Our top four ran anywhere from 70 seconds to 2:20 faster than at the same course one year ago. Our team performance wasn't where we want, and we know that can be better."
Richmond women placed a strong third among the 12 universities and colleges participating in the event. Junior Sarah Dill (Ashland, Ky.) posted the top time among the Richmond women, garnering a 20th place finish in the 5,000-meter run (18:26.6). Close behind Dill were teammates Lyndsey Webber (Sayville, N.Y.), Sherry Sikora (Succasunna, N.J.) and Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) who finished 22nd, 23rd and 25th, respectively. Junior Katie Sloan (Severna Park) turned in a 33rd place performance. The Spiders had 12 women finish in the Top 100.
"I'm excited about the continued improvement of these women. Their commitment and hard work is putting them in the position to be competitive against the best program's in Virginia," said head women's cross country coach Lori Taylor. "We had a 37 second split between our first and fifth runner's times. That is solid, but we need to continue to move our entire pack forward."
