NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Greg Zolman threw two touchdown passes and Lew Thomas ran for two more scores as Vanderbilt rallied to beat Division I-AA Richmond 28-22 Saturday night.
The victory was the first of the season for Vanderbilt (1-2) and first home victory since Sept. 23, 2000. Richmond (0-2), which had not played since losing to Virginia 17-16 on Sept. 1, built a 16-7 first-half lead behind two touchdown runs from senior quarterback Sean Gustus, but could not hold on.
Zolman completed 20 of 32 passes for 236 yards, moving him into second-place on Vanderbilt's career passing list with 6,258 yards. Zolman needs 50 yards to break Whit Taylor's school record.
Vanderbilt trailed 16-14 at halftime, but a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs by Thomas in the third quarter put the Commodores in front for good. Thomas, in his first career start, fumbled on the game's first play but went on to carry 15 times for 93 yards.
The Spiders have now lost two 1-A games by a total of seven points. Gustus led Richmond's offense with 54 yards rushing and 125 yards passing. Senior fullback Scott Fulton scored Richmond's other touchdown on a three yard run in the fourth quarter.
Heightened security and patriotic tributes greeted the 23,107 fans in attendance, with 50 percent of the revenues generated from ticket sales going to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund.
Vanderbilt Stadium was locked down Friday night before the game by security, and a canine unit from the Metro Police Department swept the stadium prior to the gates opening to the public on Saturday. Air space above the stadium was also restricted and fans were not allowed to bring in backpacks or handbags of any kind.
The Spiders play their home opener Saturday at noon against Villanova. The games marks the Atlantic 10 opener for defending co-champion Richmond and has been designated Red Cross Victims Relief Game, with a portion of ticket sales being donated to aid the relief efforts.
