Newark, Del. - Richmond (4-0) continues to roll after sliding by Cornell 2-1 during Saturday afternoon college field hockey action. The Spiders won their third consecutive contest on the road and fourth overall. Richmond's 4-0 mark ties the best start in school history set by the 1976 Westhampton College varsity field hockey team.
Senior Heather Rice (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) scored her fifth goal of the season to put the Spiders up 1-0. Senior Holly Chase (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) and junior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) were credited with assisting Rice on her 53rd career goal, placing her only three behind Dawn Reyerson on Richmond's all-time goals scored list.
Junior Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored the second and eventual game-winning goal when Murphy and Chase assisted on a corner allowing Gavin to rip a frozen rope right down the pipe splitting the stakes.
Defensively the Spiders contained a hard-pressed Cornell offense, as senior Erika Cohen (Villanova, Pa./Radford) and sophomore Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) were both credited with defensive saves. Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Alpert (Rockville, Md./Wootton) posted her third straight game allowing one goal or less.
The Spiders look for their best start in school history when they return to action at 1:00pm Sunday September 9, against Towson in Towson, Md.
