UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 30) -University of Richmond junior guard Reggie Brown (Flushing, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) scored a team-high 22 points while sophomore forward Mike Skrocki (Howell, N.J./Christian Brothers) added 18 to bolster the Spiders to a 61-53 win over the George Washington Colonials on Wednesday evening at the Robins Center. The victory was Richmond's (11-9, 5-2 Atlantic 10) third straight, which matches its longest win streak of the season. The loss, George Washington's fifth consecutive, dropped the Colonials to 10-10, 3-6 in the A-10.
The Spiders jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game but the Colonials quickly charged back. With the score tied at 12 after a Brown four-footer (14:46), Richmond would embark on a seven-minute scoring drought that saw the Spiders miss nine straight shots. GW would capitalize going on a 13-1 tear to build a 25-13 advantage with 8:00 remaining. Jaason Smith's layup at the eight-minute mark would be the Colonials' last field goal of the half. Richmond, just 1-of-10 from three-point range in the first half, trailed by five at intermission (28-23).
The home team spun their way back into the contest while the visitors struggled shooting from the field. The Colonials went nearly 14 minutes without a field goal, the final eight minutes of the first half and the first 5:56 of the second half. A Greg Collucci trey tied the contest at 35 and ended the field goal drought for GW. Richmond would go on an 18-3 run from that point, nailing 9-of 10 from the charity stripe during the run, to lead 53-41 with just over three minutes left in the game. Richmond went to the free throw line a season-high 36 times in the contest that saw two Colonials players foul out.
Richmond sophomore forward Tony Dobbins scored seven points and collected a team-best 10 rebounds, his first double-digit rebounding effort since December 1. George Washington junior guard Chris Monroe poured in a game-high 24 points in a losing effort.
The Spiders, second in the A-10 West Division, host division leader Xavier on Saturday evening at the Robins Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
