Richmond led for the final 28 minutes of the contest in route to a 78-66 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday night at the Reilly Center in Olean, N.Y. The teams traded buckets in the first seven minutes of the contest. The Bonnies last lead came after a Vidal Messiah three-pointer at the 9:17 mark. Richmond led by two, 34-32, at the break.
In the second half, the Bonnies tied the contest at 44 after a Robert Cheeks layup. That would as close as St. Bonaventure would get. Sophomore Tony Dobbins' offensive rebound and putback plus the foul capped off a Spiders 7-0 run. The Bonnies would not go away quietly pulling to within two on two different occassions in the next six minutes. Richmond held just a three-point lead with less than three minutes left in the game after a J.R. Bremer trey. That is when senior Scott Ungerer fed sophomore foward Mike Skrocki on the right side wiht 2:12 remaining. Skrocki nailed the triple with just seven seconds left on the shot clock to give Richmond a six-point edge (69-63) and to seal the win. With the win, the Spiders handed the Bonnies only their second home loss of the season.
The Bonnies, who led the nation in three-point field goals made per game at 11.0 before the contest, only connected on eight treys in the game against Richmond's trapping zone defense. Dobbins scored a career-best 26 points and corralled 10 rebounds, his third straight double-digit rebounding game. Skrocki added 24, on 6-of-12 shooting from behind the arc. Richmond shot a season-best 54 percent from tthe field.
