Durham, N.H. -- New Hampshire freshman Connor McCormick nailed a game-winning 27-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining to lead the Wildcats to a 20-19 win against Richmond in Atlantic 10 action at Cowell Stadium.
The Spiders led 12-7 at halftime and 19-14 after three quarters but allowed two field goals in the final 6:36 of the contest to suffer their third consecutive defeat. Richmond outgained New Hampshire 342--323 on the afternoon and 262-123 on the ground. Senior quarterback D'Arcy Wills engineered the offense with 17 carries for 84 yards and 5-of-11 passing for 80 yards. Wills led the Spiders on the game's opening drive to the UNH 15-yard line before stalling.
At the 11:16 mark, senior Doug Kirchner kicked the first of his two field goals.
Redshirt freshman Stacy Tutt directed his own scoring drive in the second quarter, capped by a two-yard lunge that gave Richmond a 9-0 lead at 11:16. The extra point slipped through Wills hands on the wet and soggy afternoon.
Tutt's second drive and first pass attempt failed when UNH safety Czar Wiley picked off a floater and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown at 6:15 of the second quarter. Kirchner's 23-yarder with 44 seconds remaining carried the Spiders into the break with the 12-7 advantage.
The third quarter was highlighted by rushing touchdowns from UNH's Stephan Lewis and Richmond's Kenny Dantzler. Lewis finished the game with 123 yards on 29 carries. His determined running and quarterback's Mike Granieri's timely completions late in the game put the Wildcats in position for the win.
Ramon Richeson made nine tackles for UR.
