RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of Richmond swimming team returned from its 2002 Atlantic 10 Championship with an outstanding performance in its first meet of the 2002-03 season. The Spiders won six of the nine individual events at a quad-meet hosted by North Carolina State University.
Senior Elizabeth Cook, an All-Conference performer last year, won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.26) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.06) against competition from Duke, Gardner-Webb and the Wolfpack. Freshman Brooke Boncher, competing in her first collegiate meet, excelled in winning the 50-yard freestyle (24.08) and the 100-yard free (52.81).
Last spring's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Mary Adams, also impressed as she won the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.10) and placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.08) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.25).
Anne Kirchner, another stellar Spider rookie, won the 1,000-yard freestyle and finished second in the 500-yard free in her first collegiate meet.
The Spiders return to action with a home dual-meet against Virginia Tech on Oct. 30.
