UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - With their twelfth victory on Sunday, the Richmond field hockey team surpassed the all-time mark for wins in a single season of 11, set by teams in both 1991 and 1993. The Spiders have won their last nine games, the longest winning streak in program history, and are undefeated in Atlantic 10 action.
After going 6-0 in Atlantic 10 competition in just their second year as conference members, Richmond has clinched the 2002 regular season title. The 2002 Atlantic 10 championships will be held November 8-9 at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond has received votes in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll throughout the season and is currently the only conference school in the rankings. The Spiders are currently ranked 13th in the nation in scoring defense, only allowing 1.28 goals, and 15th in margin of victory winning by an average on 1.02. Senior Jill Murphy's 17 assists rank second in the nation and freshman goalkeeper Michelle Swartz ranks 13th with a GAA of 1.285.
Three Richmond players have received A-10 Player of the Week honors and three freshman have been honored as Rookie of the Week.
