UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond football senior Steve Boyer earned Sports Network National Defensive Player of the Week, I-AA.org/College Sporting News All-Star and Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in a 26-0 shutout against Rhode Island at Meade Stadium this weekend.
Boyer recorded career highs in tackles (7), tackles for loss (5) and sacks (4) and added a forced fumble in the first Atlantic 10 game ever played over two days. The Spiders and Rams kicked off at Noon on Sat., Oct. 26 but were forced to suspend the game until Sunday because the field was submerged in water.
The Richmond, Va. native is the first Atlantic 10 student-athlete to earn a Sports Network National Player of the Week honor this season.
After seven games this fall, Boyer has notched 28 tackles and ranks second on the team with eight tackles for loss. The defensive tackle leads the team and ranks ninth in the Atlantic 10 with his four sacks. His three forced fumbles are tied for the A-10 lead.
The Spiders (3-4, 3-2 Atlantic 10) return to action against Northeastern at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.
