RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) scored her first goal of the season during the game's second overtime period to lead the Spiders to a 2-1 victory over cross-town rival VCU at Cary Street Field this evening. Richmond's record improves to 13-6 and the Spiders extend their winning streak to ten games while VCU falls to 6-11.
Richmond's Sandeep Kaur (Salford, England) set-up the game-winning tally after her shot hit the left post and Murphy was able to tap in the rebound.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead shortly into the first half when junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.) hit the cage after a pass from Kaur to score her tenth goal of the season.
VCU scored in dramatic fashion with only 19 seconds remaining in regulation to even the score and force the extra period. The goal, off a penalty corner, came after Casey Smith picked up a missed Ram shot and fed the ball to senior Tavris Parker who was able to beat the Spider goalie to score VCU's only goal of the night.
Spider goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) stopped seven shots while Abby Stiles recorded nine saves for VCU.
Richmond returns home to Crenshaw Field on Sunday, November 3 when they host Syracuse on Senior Day. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
