UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VA. - Two first half goals led the Richmond Spiders to their 2-0 shutout this afternoon over the visiting Mountaineers of Appalachian State. Richmond improves to 6-6 while Appalachian State falls to 3-8. The Spiders have now won their last three games.
Richmond took a 1-0 lead when Melissa Yuppa (Fairfield, N.J.) knocked the ball into the goal off a pass from junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.) at the 29:53 point.
The final margin was set three minutes later after freshman Michelle La Force (Centreville, Va.) scored during a scramble in front of the left side of the goal.
The Spiders offense dominated the game, taking 23 shots to the Mountaineer's three.
Richmond goalie Michelle Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) had one save on the afternoon to record her fourth shutout of the season. For the Mountaineers, Amy Sarno registered 13 saves.
Richmond starts conference play on October 11 when they travel to Amherst to face the University of Massachusetts. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
