Seven former Spider standout football players are continuing their career in the professional ranks this fall. The University of Richmond is proud of these outstanding athletes for representing Spider football in many positive ways.
The following is a player-by-player update on the 2002 season so far:
Shawn Barber (Hermitage, Pa.) is second on the Philadelphia Eagles with 22 tackles. The starting linebacker has recorded one interception, one tackle for loss and is among the NFL's leaders with two fumble recoveries.
The Eagles are 3-2 this season and have a bye this weekend. They return to action against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.
Dwaune Jones (Washington D.C.) is on the physically unable to perform list with the Houston Texans after suffering an injury during the preseason.
The Texans (1-3) host Buffalo at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.
Eight-year NFL veteran Matt Joyce (Scottsdale, Ariz.) remains a constant in the trenches for the Detroit Lions. Listed as the second-string right tackle, Jones has seen considerable playing time this fall.
The Lions (1-3) travel to Minnesota for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Oct. 13.
After playing in the World League, Paris Lenon (Lynchburg, Va.) is a major contributor to the Green Bay Packers this season. Listed as a back-up linebacker on the depth chart, Lenon has made seven special teams tackles and one stop on defense.
The Packers return to action at New England for a 1 o'clock game on Sunday, Oct. 13.
Already named Canadian Football League Defensive Player of the Week, Marc Megna (Fall River, Mass.) is enjoying a stellar season for the Montreal Alouettes. The defensive lineman leads the team and ranks third in the league with five sacks. He also leads the team with six tackles for loss and is fifth with 40 tackles. The former NFL player has two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception.
Megna has led the Alouettes to a 12-3 record and a first-place standing in the East Division. His squad will play another former Spiders' team, the Edmonton Eskimos (12-3), in a battle of first-place squads on Monday, Oct. 14 at 4 p.m.
The Eskimos' special teams extraordinaire, Winston October (Dale City, Va.), continues to wreak havoc on the opposition. October ranks third in the CFL with 744 punt return yards and is fourth with 714 kick-off return yards. He has returned one punt for a touchdown and is averaging 21.0 yards per kick-off return. The former Spider defensive back is second on the team with 1,569 all-purpose yards.
Ryan Tolhurst is on the injured reserve list with the Carolina Panthers. Tolhurst was impressive before injuring his leg during the preseason.
The Panthers (3-2) host Dallas at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13.
