UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond defeated Rider, 2-1 this afternoon at Crenshaw Field in the NCAA Play-In game. This will be the first trip to the NCAA tournament for the Atlantic 10 Champions, who have won their last 14 games.
Rider took a 1-0 lead at the 25:20 mark in the first half off a goal by freshman Courtney Bertos (Rockaway, N.J.). Classmate Victoria Barrington (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) assisted on the play.
Richmond opened the second half with a goal by junior Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) to tie the game at one. Off a pass from Michelle La Force (Centreville, Va.), Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J.) knocked the ball to Decembrino who was able to tap the ball in the net.
The Spiders set the game margin at the 49:06 point when Melissa Yuppa (Fairfield, N.J.) scored after a scramble in front of the net. Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) was credited with the assist.
Richmond earns the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and improves to 17-6. Rider ends its season with a 12-8 record.
