UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -Junior forward Mike Skrocki (Howell, N.J.) scored a team-high 21 points in leading the Spiders to a 87-58 win over Gulbene Buki on Friday evening at the Robins Center.
Sophomore Jamaal Scott (Phoenix, Az.) added 11 points while junior center Eric Zwayer (Sebring, Fla.) pumped in 10 and pulled down six rebounds. Junior Tony Dobbins, the third leading swiper in the A-10 a season ago, registered four steals on the evening.
Richmond jumped out to an early lead in the contest never trailing in the contest. A Skrocki reverse lay-in on a fast break at the 15:23 mark put the home team up by seven (14-7). The Spiders soon stretched their lead to double digits. The Spiders capitalized on 11 Buki turnovers in the first stanza, scoring 20 points off the miscues. Skrocki netted 17 of his 21 points in the first 20 minutes on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
The Spiders continued their intensity in the second half from a number of different sources as 11 of the 12 players that saw action scored at least a point. Richmond led by as many as 35 after a Kevin Steenberge tip-in at the 3:48 mark.
I thought we played with a lot of energy tonight," head coach Jerry Wainwright noted. "I really liked our approach."
