Men's Basketball Cruises to 92-46 Win over Radford

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -Five Richmond players scored in double figures to lead the Spiders past intra-state rival Radford, 92-46, Friday evening at the Robins Center. It was the season opener for both teams. The win was Richmond's largest margin of victory since December 3, 1979, a 132-69 (+63) win over Bluefield. The win was also Jerry Wainwright's first as the Richmond head coach.
"One thing I really appreciate is their unselfishness," first-year coach Wainwright noted. "This team makes the extra pass, looks for others, and that only will also make us a better offensive team."
The Spiders stormed out of the gate, gaining a 12-0 advantage after a Jamaal Scott (Phoenix, Az.) follow-thru slam at the 15:29 mark. The Highlanders closed to within eight points on a Chris Goodin three-pointer with 13:20 remaining (16-8), but that would be as near as the visitors would come. Three consecutive Spider triples, two from junior forward Mike Skrocki (Howell, N.J.) and the other from sophomore guard Jason Morton (Charlotte, N.C.), stretched the lead back to double digits. Richmond led 40-21 at the break.
Richmond's Scott found a streaking Tony Dobbins (Mitchellville, Md.) downcourt for the fastbreak lay-in to cap off a 15-4 run to start the second stanza. The Spiders led by as many as 48 points, after a Kevin Steenberge jumper in the lane.
Dobbins paced all scorers with 18 points and nine rebounds. Skrocki added 16, on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point territory. Sophomore transfer Jamaal Scott, in his Richmond debut, added 13 points. Senior guard Jeff Myers and sophomore forward Patrick O'Malley chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Spiders shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three-point range, their highest percentage since Feb. 24, 2001 when they hit for 61.5 percent (8-of-13).
" We have a lot of closeness, that's something we have carried over from last year," Dobbins remarked. "We shot the ball great tonight. Everyone on the team this summer, worked to get better and it showed this evening."
NOTES:
First time five UR players have scored in double figures since January 8, 1997, an 83-77 win over VMI (Jarod Stevenson, Carlos Cueto, Daryl Oliver, Rick Edwards, Eric Poole).
First time the Spiders have scored 90-or-more points since January 12, 2001, a 90-80 win over McNeese State in the Robins Center.
