NORFOLK, VA - The top-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (20-3) scored within minutes of the opening whistle and never trailed in a 5-1 victory over the Richmond Spiders in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament on a rainy Foreman Field.
UR, making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, saw a 14-game winning streak snapped, and ended the season with a program-best 17-7 record. The top ranked Lady Monarchs reached the second round of NCAA Tournament action for the ninth straight year.
In the opening game, the Lady Monarchs raced out to a 2-0 lead within
the first minute and a half of the opening whistle. Freshman forward
Rosalinda Banuelos scored a mere 43 seconds into the game
and under a minute later senior midfielder Tiffany Snow sailed in the eventual game-winner on one of her game-high three goals.
Snow, the CAA Tournament MVP and Player of the Year, would also round out the half converting a penalty stroke, giving Old Dominion a 3-0 lead at the half.
Senior midfielder Tara Herrmann extended the Lady Monarch lead to 3-0 with 23:46 remaining, but Richmond quickly charged downfield after the push to thwart a possible Old Dominion shutout. Senior forward Sandeep Kaur passed to classmate Melissa Yuppa at the right side of the Old Dominion net shooting the ball past Lady Monarch netminder Marybeth Freeman. Snow then gave the Lady Monarchs their fifth goal and her third of the afternoon on a penalty corner with five minutes remaining.
Freeman ended the afternoon with three saves, while Richmond's rookie Michelle Swartz recorded seven stops in the loss.
Old Dominion outshot the Spiders 16-6, allowing Richmond to fire off just one shot in the first half of play. The Lady Monarchs also out cornered Richmond 13-2.
