UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond field hockey players Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) were named to the 2002 STX/NFHCA South Region second team released today. The Spiders compiled a 17-7 record on their way to capturing the Atlantic 10 Championship and making their first-ever NCAA appearance.
Murphy, the A-10's Offensive Player of the Year, made her mark on the Spider record book this season. She is ranked fifth nationally in assists with 19. She holds the Richmond record for assists in a single season and is the program's all-time career assist leader (31). The Spiders' co-captain was selected to play in the NFHCA North/South Senior All-Star game, held on Saturday, November 23 on the University of Louisville campus.
Decembrino anchored the Spider defense, which posted nine shutouts in 24 games this season. Decembrino was honored as the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and was named A-10 Tournament MVP. The junior back was a major force in conference play as Richmond allowed just three goals on their way to a perfect 6-0 record. Decembrino had nine points on the season, scoring two goals and registering five assists.
