Richmond, Va. -- Northeastern freshman Miro Kesic booted a 57-yard, game-winning field goal with four seconds remaining to lead the Huskies past the University of Richmond, 24-21, in an Atlantic 10 contest at UR Stadium. Kesic's effort established a new Atlantic 10 record for the longest field goal.
Trailing 21-7 heading into the fourth quarter, the Spiders rallied for two touchdowns to knot the game 21-21. Richmond redshirt freshman Stacy Tutt engineered the comeback, scoring all three Richmond touchdowns on one-yard runs.
The tying score came at 1:03 of the final stanza and capped a 10-play, 67-yard drive that consumed 3:35. Northeastern then started from their own 30 and moved the ball 30 yards to put Kesic in position for the program record-breaking kick.
Northeastern's Shawn Brady and Eric Thomas connected on an eight-yard and a 40-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to put the Huskies in front 14-0. Their first score, at 7:03, snapped Richmond's scoreless defense streak at 128:13.
Tutt answered with his first one-yard touchdown at the 9:55 mark of the third quarter to bring Richmond within seven points. The Huskies' Tim Gale powered in from two yards out to extend the lead to 21-7. Gale finished the game with 155 rushing yards on 33 attempts.
Tutt's two fourth-quarter touchdowns gave him 62 yards on the afternoon. It marked the first time since Dec. 2, 2000 that a Spider had scored three touchdowns in a game (Sean Gustus at Montana).
Richmond outgained Northeastern, 317-304, on the afternoon. The Spider defense was led by seniors Mark Thompson (12 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FR) and Maurice Newbill (9 tackles, 1 sack, 1 PBU). Northeastern's Adam Walter gathered a game-high 18 stops for the Huskies.
Both teams missed two field goals. Richmond blocked NU's first attempt at 11:18 of the first.
