HAMPTON, Va.- Hampton guard Devin Green sunk two free-throws with 1.1 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Pirates past the visiting Richmond Spiders, 61-60, Wednesday evening at the HU Convocation Center. Richmond center Eric Zwayer's try for the win at the buzzer fell short.
Junior guard Eric Zwayer's contributed 11 points in the loss. Hampton's Barry Hairston scored 19 points off the bench. It was the first meeting between the two Virginia schools.
The seesaw battle began with the opening tip, as the first stanza featured 13 lead changes and seven ties. Hairston's high-flying three-pointer at the 10:00 mark capped off 11 straight points for the Pirates reserve and gave the home team a three-point advantage (19-16). Dobbins responded with a leaping steal at mid-court and a one-on-two break. His deuce and the subsequent free throw tied the contest at 19-19. The Pirates outscored the Spiders, 11-4, in the closing five minutes of the first half to lead by five (37-32) at the break.
Hampton had its largest advantage of the second half (5) at the 14:48 mark on a Bruce Brown layup. Neither team led by more than four points from that point. Two consecutive layups from Zwayer helped Richmond slice the HU lead to one, 41-40. However, two straight Spider turnovers in a minute span allowed Hampton to again build an advantage on the scoreboard, a four-point edge (54-50) at the 3:42 mark.
Still, Richmond would not go away. A lay-up from Dobbins, his first basket of the second half, and a jumper from senior Jeff Myers tied the game for the fifth time of the half with 2:34 to play (57-57). Skrocki hit what appeared to be the game-winning shot, slicing through the lane and connecting on a 14-foot jumper with less than 10 seconds to play to put the Spiders ahead, 60-59. On the ensuing possession, Green drove from the left side into the lane and was fouled by Scott. He, subsequently, sunk the two free throws. Myers throw-in downcourt to Zwayer was on target, however, his attempt was no good.
Richmond returns home to the Robins Center this Saturday, November 30, hosting the Charlottte 49ers (1-1) at 7:30 p.m.
