Six Football Student-Athletes Earn All-Atlantic 10 Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond football team was represented by six student-athletes on the 2002 Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams in a vote by the league's coaches, it was announced today.
Seniors Steve Boyer, Ramon Richeson and Mark Thompson all earned First Team honors from the Spider defense, while junior offensive lineman Joe Wilson also earned First Team honors. Senior linebacker Adrian Archie and junior wide receiver Boyd Ouden both earned Second Team honors.
Wilson, from Doylestown, Pa., led a Richmond offense that posted the sixth-highest rushing total in program history with 2,185 yards.
A Richmond, Va. native, Boyer led the team and ranked third in the Atlantic 10 with 20 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. The defensive tackle ranked sixth on the team and led the defensive line with 64 tackles. He led the A-10 with five forced fumbles.
The Spiders' second-leading tackler, Richeson made 101 stops and tied for the A-10 lead with five interceptions. The Williamsburg, Va. native, made a career-high 23 tackles against Delaware (Sept. 7), and made two interceptions against James Madison (Oct. 19) and at Rhode Island (Oct. 26).
Thompson led the Spiders and ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 with 115 tackles. His total is the highest by a Richmond player since Bryan Leibrand made 129 stops in 1995. The Fayetteville, N.C. native also recorded 13 tackles for loss and tied for the conference lead with five fumbles recovered.
Archie, from Concord, N.C., ranked third on the team with 92 tackles and led the squad with 13 quarterback hurries. Archie, along with Wilson and Thompson earned Third Team All-Conference honors in 2001.
A Woodbridge, Va. native, Ouden compiled the seventh-best single-season receiving total in program history (819 yards). His seven touchdown catches tied for sixth on the all-time single-season touchdown receptions list. He averaged 74.5 receiving yards per game and 22.1 yards per catch.
Richmond completed the 2002 campaign with a 4-7 overall record, 4-5 in A-10 action. The Spiders 35-13 against William and Mary was head coach Jim Reid's second largest margin of victory against a ranked opponent during his tenure at Richmond (28-0 vs. #4 Rhode Island, Oct. 27, 2001).
