PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell to Northwestern, 68-65 in the opening round of the Rutger's Coca-Cola Classic this afternoon at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Richmond scored the first basket of the game, a lay-up by Amber Goppert, and the two teams exchanged leads for the first ten minutes of the game. The Spiders hit a dry-spell, going six minutes without a basket, allowing Northwestern to build a ten-point lead. Senior Elise Ryder connected on a three to begin a Richmond scoring run in which Cammy Desmond contributed five points, a three point basket followed by a fifteen foot jumper, in under a minute to close the gap and Northwestern took a 30-29 lead at the half.
Richmond opened the second half cold, missing ten of their first 12 shots while Northwestern went on a 18-5 run to take a 14 point advantage. The Spiders fought back, getting within three off a free throw by Ryder with three minutes left but Northwestern remained calm, going a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line in the game's final two minutes. Freshman Araceli Gil hit two three-pointers in games last ten seconds, but it would not be enough as Richmond fell 68-65.
Sophomore Kate Flavin led the Spiders with 20 points and eight rebounds while teammate Ebony Tanner chipped in 13 points.
Northwestern dominated the boards, defensively outrebounding the Spiders 22-13. Richmond struggled from the field, shooting .375 for the game and only hitting 4-15 from three point range.
The Spiders return to action tomorrow as they face either Rutgers or Wagner in the consolation game of the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic at noon.
