UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior center Ebony Tanner (Garner, N.C.) scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Richmond Spiders, but it wasn't enough as the Houston Jaguars came away with a 78-64 victory on Friday night at the Robins Center.
Richmond freshman Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was five-of-seven from three-point range, scoring 19 points and pulling down eight rebounds in her collegiate debut. Junior Amber Goppert (Malone, N.Y.) contributed 13 points and seven assists in the effort.
The two teams played evenly for the first ten minutes, but the Jaguars went on a 12-0 run to take a lead that they would not relinquish. Rasheeda Clark's basket at the 6:07 mark gave Houston a 25-18 edge, but the Spiders fought back as Gil connected on her third triple of the night to bring Richmond within two (23-25). The teams left the court at halftime with the Jaguars holding a 34-24 lead.
The Jaguars opened the second half with a lay-up by Tamicha Jackson and never looked back. Houston took its largest lead of the half (26) at the 9:36 point on a basket by Clark. Richmond pulled within 12 when Gil hit her fifth three with just over two minutes remaining but could get no closer, as Houston cruised to the 78-64 win.
Richmond plays in its final exhibition game as they host Team Concepts on Sunday, November 17, at 2:00 p.m.
