UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond claimed its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship, registering a 4-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts in the title game of the 2002 Atlantic 10 Field Championship at the University of Richmond's Crenshaw Field.
Richmond, in just its second year as a member of the Atlantic 10, ends a Massachusetts stronghold on the title. The Minutewomen had previously captured 10 championships, including the last six straight.
The Spiders' first score came less than seven minutes into the contest. Senior Sarah Adams (Tulsa, Okla.) took the direct hit off of a penalty corner, only to have her shot deflected by UMass defender Danielle Carrier (North Attleboro, Mass.). Midfielder Kristin Gavin (Roseland, N.J.) got the rebound on the left side and punched the ball to sophomore Laura Hur (Chevy Chase, Md.), wide open on the right side of the box for the score.
Richmond added to its advantage in the 14th minute as junior back Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) converted a penalty stroke. Teammate Sandeep Kaur (Salford, England) gave the Spiders a 3-0 lead, streaking down the right side and firing into the left corner of the box at the 13:55 mark. Massachusetts would get on the board with just over four minutes to go in the first half, converting a penalty corner. Erika Whiston (Athol, Mass.) took the corner and sent it to Stacey Blue (Bellingham, Mass.), who made the stop and set up Sarah Bohonowicz (South Deerfield, Mass.).
The Spiders scored the final tally in the 67th minute when Gavin converted a penalty corner, off the stop from senior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior Brittney Parrish (Louisville, Ky.).
Junior Lydia Decembrino was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player. Joining Decembrino on the All-Championship Team are teammates Sandeep Kaur, Heather Kenney, Patricia Borneo and Adrianne Monaco of Massachusetts, West Chester's Stacey Tomes, and Natasha Pronga and Brett Dymarczyk of Saint Joseph's.
