UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond senior Jill Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior Lydia Decembrino (Hummelstown, Pa.) were named to the 2002 Virginia Sports Information Directors'All-State field hockey team, as announced by the organization today. The Spiders compiled a 17-7 record, the most wins in program history, on their way to capturing the Atlantic 10 Championship and making their first-ever NCAA appearance.
Murphy, a tri-captain on this year's squad, left her mark on the Spider record book. She holds the Richmond record for assists in a single season (19) and is the program's all-time career assist leader (31). She concluded the fall campaign ranked fifth nationally in total assists with 19. Murphy, a member of the 2002 STX/NFHCA South Region second-team, played in the NFHCA North/South Senior All-Star game on Saturday, November 23 on the University of Louisville campus. She was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Championship team following the conference tournament.
Decembrino anchored a Spider defense that posted nine shutouts in 24 games this season. She was honored as the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and selected as the conference tournament MVP. Decembrino was a major force in conference play as Richmond allowed just three goals on their way to a perfect 6-0 record. A member of the 2002 STX/NFHCA South Region second-team, she recorded 13 points on the season, scoring four goals and registering five assists.
