Women's Swimming & Diving Makes Big Splash in A-10 Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Richmond women's swimming and diving team claimed the team title on the final day of competition at the Verizon/Atlantic 10 Conference Swimming & Diving Championships at the Flickinger Aquatic Center. The Spiders finished with a score of 752 points, 167.5 more than second place St. Bonaventure. This marks the first-ever Atlantic 10 title for the University of Richmond in any sport as the school is in its inaugural season of Atlantic 10 competition. Freshman Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer while first-year head coach Matthew Kredich was named the Women's Coach of the Year.
On Saturday, Adams won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.33, a school record that bested her own previous time of 2:21.96. The freshman, who was named Rookie of the Week four times during the season, also set two conference records during the conference championships. Adams and teammates junior Elizabeth Cook, sophomore Maureen Sabri and senior Kristin Newkirk also won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:27.89.
Richmond captured its first Atlantic 10 championship by posting a three-day total of 752 points. St. Bonaventure finished in second place with 584.5 followed by George Washington (459) in third, Massachusetts (433.5) in fourth, LaSalle (350) in fifth, Fordham (16) in sixth, Rhode Island (295) in seventh, Xavier (268) in eighth and Duquesne (137) is ninth.
Coach Kredich, who came to Richmond from Brown University, led the Spiders to an 11-2 record this season. During the season, the Spiders held the conference's top time in 13 of the 14 events on their way to winning the championship.
