UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 27) -Three Richmond players posted double figures to lift the Spiders (16-12, 10-5 Atlantic 10) to a 67-50 win over Fordham (8-18, 4-11 Atlantic 10) on Wednesday evening at the Robins Center. With the victory, Richmond improved to 6-0 in inter-divisional play, becoming the first team ever from the West to sweep a season series versus the East. The game was the final regular season home game for Richmond seniors Justin Lay, Tim Faulconer, and Scott Ungerer.
Richmond forward Scott Ungerer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) netted two triples during the Spiders spurt. Appearing in his final regular season home game, Ungerer lit up the Rams for 15 first half points as the Spiders carried a 36-27 lead into the locker room. It was an inside out first half as the Rams saw 22 of their 27 points come in the paint while the Spiders drilled seven triples in the half.
Richmond stretched its lead to double digits in the second half behind stellar play from its guard play. Richmond guard Jeff Myers kept the Rams at bay. His jumper at the 15:07 mark followed by his trey just over a minute later gave UR an 11-point advantage. All eight of Myers' points came in the second half as he added a game-best six assists (and no turnovers) to his stat line. Skrocki's three-pointer from the far side with just over four minutes remaining gave the home team a 16-point lead and a comfortable cushion as they cruised to the 67-50 win.
Skrocki led all scorers with 20 points, his 15th consecutive game in double digits. In his final regular season home game, Ungerer registered 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. "If you look at Scott's line tonight...that is what Scott is, said Richmond head coach John Beilein. "He is a perfect player for this system. He is one of the major reasons we have had success the last four years."
Junior Reggie Brown added 14 points in the victory. The Spiders conclude their regular season on Saturday, March 2 traveling to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Spiders battling Dayton for second place in the West and a first-round bye in the A-10 Tournament, currently hold a one-game lead over the Flyers. Dayton dropped a 75-70 overtime decision to Temple Wednesday evening. The Flyers close out their regular season with La Salle on Saturday. On the bid for second place, Beilein added, "I stopped wishing a long time ago who we would play. Lets just go play."
