RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond men's basketball will look to build on a high-scoring season opener Thursday when the Spiders host Southern Virginia at the Robins Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Richmond enters the game 1-0 following Monday's 100-77 win over UNC Asheville, while Southern Virginia will enter at 0-0. The Spiders' 100 points Monday were their second most in a regulation game against a Division I opponent over the last 10 seasons, and their 28 assists were their most in a game since 2015. Junior guard Dominick Stewart led six Richmond players in double figures with a career-high 29 points.
Southern Virginia, a Division III member of the USA South Conference, finished 15-12 overall and 10-4 in conference play last season. Thursday will be the second meeting between the schools after Richmond defeated the Knights 84-56 in the 2025-26 season opener at the Robins Center.

AN OPENER TO REMEMBER
Richmond's new-look roster made an immediate impact Monday. The Spiders shot 59% from the field and 52% from 3-point range, making 13 triples while scoring 100 points in a regulation game for just the second time against a Division I opponent over the last 10 seasons. Richmond led 56-27 at halftime and built its advantage to as many as 35 in the second half.
The Spiders finished with 28 assists on 36 made field goals, three assists shy of the program record and their most since recording 29 against Stetson on Nov. 15, 2015. Derin Saran handed out eight assists, while Aiden Argabright and Amon Dörries each recorded seven. It marked the first game of the Chris Mooney era in which three Richmond players finished with at least seven assists.
STEWART STARTS STRONG
Stewart scored a career-high 29 points in his Richmond debut, surpassing his previous career high by 11. His total was the most by a Spider since Jordan King scored 29 at Fordham on Jan. 31, 2024.
Stewart was one of six Spiders to reach double figures, equaling Richmond's most double-digit scorers in a game during Mooney's 22 seasons. Jamie Kaiser Jr. scored 16, Saran added 15 and Argabright, Dörries and Andrew Ball each scored 10.
DÖRRIES DOES IT ALL
Dörries filled the stat sheet in his Richmond debut, finishing with 10 points, seven assists and five blocked shots. Both his assist and block totals were career highs, and he became the first Spider of the Mooney era to record at least seven assists and five blocks in the same game.
Only two Division I players recorded seven assists and five blocks in a game during the entire 2025-26 season.
LOOKING FOR 2-0
A win Thursday would give Richmond a 2-0 start for the second consecutive season and the sixth time in the last eight years. The Spiders would also improve to 2-0 all-time against Southern Virginia and 6-0 against non-Division I opponents under Mooney.
Richmond has won seven consecutive November home games and is 23-3 in its last 26 home games played during the month dating back to 2018. A victory Thursday would also give the Spiders wins in 10 of their last 11 non-conference home games.
Southern Virginia returns several contributors from last year's 15-win team, including 6-foot-10 sophomore Austin Mitchell, who shot 78% from the field as a freshman, and sophomore guard Mason Hunter, who appeared in all 27 games and made 31 3-pointers. The Knights are coached by Trace Bevell.
Thursday is Richmond's final tune-up before its first game away from the Robins Center. The Spiders will travel to Philadelphia Sunday to face Temple at The Palestra, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m. on ESPN2.
