Women's Tennis Falls To Virginia Tech, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's tennis team defeated Richmond University, 6-1, Saturday morning at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The Hokies improve to 5-1 on the season while the Spiders fall to 2-3.
Tech, ranked 75th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Poll, won five of the six single matches and picked up the doubles point by sweeping all three matches.
Playing form the No. 1 spot, the Hokies's Kristen Stubbs (Jr., Hilton Head, S.C.) defeated Jeannette Cluskey, 6-3, 6-2. No. 2 Meredith Vincent (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) edged Vanessa Bagnato, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Zdenka Videnova (Jr., Skopje, Macedonia) picked up the win at No. 4, beating Casey Cohen, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. No. 5 Ginger Lowdermilk (So., Bossier City, La.) downed Courtney Klein, 6-1, 7-6 (3) while No. 6 Bridget Bruner (Jr., Richmond, Va.) defeated Patty Devlin, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Tech's only loss came at the No. 3 when Carolyn Kramer (Fr., Manchester, Mo.) dropped a nail-bitter to Lindsay Cox. After splitting the first two games, Cox edged Kramer in the super tiebreaker, winning, 6-4, 6-7 (5) 10-5.
The Hokies picked up the doubles point by winning all three matches. The No. 1 team of Felice Lam (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) and Stubbs defeated Cluskey and Devlin, 8-6. Playing in the No. 2 spot, Kramer and Vincent downed Bagnato and Cox, 8-4. In the No. 3 doubles match, Lowdermilk and Videnova edged Cohen and Klein, 9-8 (4).
